Overview:
CSEP seeks to recognize outstanding research conducted by its graduate student members. Each year, the society holds a Graduate Student Award (GSA) competition in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Up to four finalists are invited to present their research at the GSA Symposium, scheduled for the first evening AGM.
Eligibility:
To be eligible, a candidate must have been registered as a full-time graduate student at a Canadian institution for at least one semester during the 12-month period prior to the AGM. The work must have been performed at the student´s home institution or at a foreign institution as part of a duly recognized collaboration with the home institution. The student must be a member of CSEP at the time of application and be first author on an abstract submitted for presentation at the subsequent AGM. There is no age limit.
Submission Procedure:
An application consists of the following:
1. A standard abstract formatted in accordance with the AGM submission guidelines.
2. A two-page (~600 word) outline by the student that describes their project in more detail. The outline should explain the rationale for the work, purpose and/or hypothesis, research design, results, discussion that highlights the significance of the work and key references. Up to two figures may be included within the two-page limit.
3. A one-page (~300 word) letter from the student´s supervisor that explains the role and contribution(s) of the applicant to the research project.
Selection Procedure:
An evaluation committee will review all applications received prior to the submission deadline, which is usually the same date as the AGM abstract submission deadline. The committee will consist of the VP Research (Chair), the Voting Member-at-Large (or their designate in case of conflict) and one other CSEP Member. The committee will select up to four finalists, who will be informed at least one month prior to the AGM. Finalists will be invited to deliver a 15 min oral presentation of their work (followed by a 5 min discussion period) at the GSA Symposium. Following the GSA Symposium, members of the evaluation committee will meet to select a winner, who will be announced during the AGM Awards Ceremony.
Prizes:
The winner will receive $500.00 and the other finalists $250 each to assist with travel expenses associated with the AGM.
